About

 We have 25+ years experience of designing, developing, improving storage, handling and display facilities for merchants and diy retailers. We work for the small, one-branch, independent merchants right up to the national groups and DIY ’sheds’. It doesn’t matter if it’s just improving a trade counter, sales area OR designing a timber / building materials  store OR yard stock / storage layout and traffic flow OR a complete greenfield 15 acre site, new-build flagship branch with a 12,000 M² showroom, trade counter, warehouse complex, that’s what we do!

 We deal with all aspects of Storage, Handling, Merchandising and Display.

There are many suppliers of shop fitting systems + many suppliers of pallet racking systems + there are a number of suppliers of cantilever storage systems + some mezzanine specialists + suppliers of fork trucks etc. But we are not aware of any other companies in the UK or Ireland who have a full and detailed understanding of all these essential aspects of merchant operations – CSD does.

FREE DESIGN?
Many racking suppliers will offer to do “free designs” for you but what you have to ask yourself is:

  • Are they able to design the layout and specification to suit your specific needs, or will it be based on what they manufacture / supply/?
  • Do they have knowledge and experience of all the racking systems that you may require or will you need to go to ‘A N Other’ for an element of the project?
  • Are they an innovative developer of systems or a distributor of a existing / standard systems?
  • Will they come up with standard solutions to storage and display problems or do they use systems in a creative way to supply your needs, giving you a competitive edge and modern image?
  • Do they have the knowledge, expertise and experience to view the specific design in the context of your whole business?

CSD can do all this and more + suggest the right, cost-effective, system[s] for your job, irrespective of brand.

MORE THAN JUST ‘BOXES ON A PIECE OF PAPER’
Whilst we understand all the technical aspects of storage and display systems, a CSD design can also address:

  • The creation of an overall corporate image through methods of storage and display / types of systems specified – including colours and signage/ticketing systems to suit your particular target customer base;
  • Site entrances and exits;
  • Site and warehouse pedestrian and vehicular traffic flows + associated Health & Safety issues;
  • Order picking, collation & loading + goods inwards + customer collections + ‘park-and-load’ + customer parking + separation of all of these;
  • Location of service points, [where appropriate], in yard warehouse, trade counter and showrooms:
  • Stock location and space allocation in relation to existing stock ranges and volumes, taking into account any defined additions;
  • Full stock location plan for yard & warehouse, even as far as individual brick and block stacks showing numbers of ‘facings’ and stacking depths to accommodate specific stock ranges and volumes;
  • Full merchandising plan for self selection areas – even as far as range-specific rack-by-rack ‘planograms’;
  • Taking into account ‘shrinkage’ / pilferage issues;
  • The production of a complete racking specification, [taking into account re-use of existing equipment], based on a detailed merchandising / stock layout as above converted into a bay-by-bay racking specification which can be used to go out to tender on a true ‘like-for-like’ basis for the equipment is right for you.

NEW-BUILD?
We are fortunate to be involved in a large number of these projects which involve the definition of all of the above plus:

  • Designing the whole business prior to architect involvement then:
  • Briefing and liaising with Architects, Planners, Highways to ensure best, most efficient use of the site within the associated constraints;
  • Specifying required building size[s] and location[s] in relation to storage and display calculations + plus traffic flows, parking etc;
  • Overall site security through layout, traffic controls and personnel;
  • Helping specify materials handling equipment + collaborating with specified supplier in relation to overall layout and storage systems;
  • External display areas;
  • Project management in collaboration with the Architects / Builders;
  • Being available for advice and assistance across all these issues and more throughout the currency of the project;

NB: we have worked on very many of these projects both large and small for all types of merchants and can bring this experience to bear on your project whilst you get on with managing the existing business and generating the cash to fund the new project!

BLUEPRINTS & ‘SATELLITES’
These two concepts are really variations on a theme and may, or may not, involve new-builds.

Blueprints tend to be a generalised concept that we develop for merchants who have plans to add a few branches to their existing portfolio. They are usually smaller branches intended to make a presence in other [smaller] towns relatively close to the main business. We develop an ‘deal’ format to accommodate the client’s business mix, usually on a very space-effective format. This detailed building, site, layout specification can then be used for systematic property searches, often through one or two commercial estate agents.

Satellites tend to be similar but often relate to a merchant who has a strong position in a particular large town or city by virtue of having a large, very effective site. Creating a concept branch which works on the 80/20 stock basis with relatively low stock levels supported by the ‘mothership-branch’ in terms of a ‘milk round’ delivery makes their offer more accessible [traffic wise] to a wider number of customers. Such operations also generate very good stock turn and returns on investment.

REFURBISHMENT OF / EXTENDING EXISTING BUILDINGS?
Clearly not all of you have the luxury of indulging in a new-build and therefore much of our work involves making best use of existing / non-ideal premises and possibly tagging onto an extension to them. We have become adept at making best use of these non-ideal premises.

In the past we have been involved in developing merchant operations in a wide range of ‘light industrial’ buildings with limited height and non-clearspan trusses + dreadful column layouts. We’ve had to deal with all sorts of varying levels within premises and some of our more ‘interesting’ projects involved using a Grain Store, a Bakery, a WW2 Aircraft Hanger, a Bacon Factory and a Leather Tannery!

All of the above principles and techniques apply to these projects; it just requires a little more ingenuity and creativity.
